Kayak Kamp

Get outside and enjoy the beauty of Bantam Lake and Bantam River while learning how to Kayak! Challenge yourself and make new friends, all while practicing social distancing in a safe and fun environment.
This program is made possible with the help of Sportsmen’s and their knowledgeable and adventurous staff who want to share their love of the outdoors with the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts.
Ages: 10-15 years old    Limited to 6 participants
Location: Litchfield Town Beach
Parents will need to sign a waiver from Sportsmen’s on the first day.   Please parents, stay in your car, a leader will come to you.
Time: Tuesdays in August 2020 (8/4, 8/11, 8/18, 8/25)   8am – 10am
Cost:  $65 per session or $240 for the month
Included: Kayak, Kayak Paddle, and Life Jacket
Suggested equipment for paddlers:  Sunscreen, Sun Hat, Sun Shirt, Bathing Suit, Water Shoes and Water Bottle

Senior Guide:  Kaylee Cappello
Kaylee is a Litchfield native home for the summer from California where she has worked the last 5 years for Boojum, an outdoor education program that guides students in grades 4-12 on backpacking, water rafting and kayaking, rock climbing and base camping trips.  She loves working with kids and teaching them about flora and fauna, team building, personal growth and leadership with the outdoors as their classroom.  She is a certified Wilderness First Responder as well as CPR and emergency first aid. In the off season she is a certified ski coach at Mammoth Mountain in Northern California.  Kaylee is looking forward to getting on the water with the paddlers and teaching them about the local waters and encouraging them to respect the beautiful land that we enjoy in the Northwest Corner. 
Junior Guide:  Radley Cherosnick
Radley is entering 8th grade at Rumsey Hall School. She is an avid paddler, having grown up spending her summers on Bantam Lake, and paddling local waterways, she is very acquainted with the sport. Radley is First Aid and CPR certified. When she’s not paddling you can find her on any one of three lacrosse teams she plays on, defending goal for one of her two soccer teams, grabbing rebounds for her RHS basketball team or racing her dad down any ski hill!!
Summary of the Program:  After a review of water safety and paddling basics, the group will depart from Litchfield Town Beach and head out onto Bantam Lake and/or Bantam River. Tour route will depend on water conditions, ability of paddlers and will be at the discretion of the Senior Guide. Director will be made aware of route prior to the group’s departure.  The paddle adventure will be enhanced by the Guides’ extensive knowledge of White Memorial and Environmental Awareness. Paddlers will engage in team building exercises throughout the morning challenging their minds and bodies.
Water Safety: Paddlers are asked to arrive 15 mins prior to designated start time to go over water safety and paddling instructions.  Paddlers and Guides will wear life jackets at all times. Senior Guide will be equipped with a cell phone, if the need to contact the group should arise. Paddlers should be experienced swimmers.
Drop off procedure and COVID-19 Safety Protocol:
Participant’s temperatures will be taken by Senior Guide prior to departing car, recorded and signed off by parents along with a brief set of COVID-19 screening questions.
Parents will be asked to remain in their vehicle at time of drop-off and pick-up.
Guides will wear a mask at all times.  Paddlers will wear a mask to and from their vehicle.  It is at the discretion of the parents as to whether they want their child to wear a mask while on the water. If you would like your child to wear a mask while paddling please inform your child and the Senior Guide. Paddlers shall maintain a social distance of at least six feet while on the beach and once on the water.
Guides will be responsible for reinforcing social distancing, supervising the use of hand sanitizer and maintaining the cleanliness of all equipment.  Please inform your child of general social distancing practices.
Cancelation due to inclement weather:  Participants will be notified via text message of cancelation by 7:30am due to inclement weather.  Cancelled adventures will be made up at the discretion of the Guides. If adventure cannot be made up, you will be issued a refund.
